City leaders in Dundee want to ‘open its doors to the world’ through business events.

Scotland’s fourth largest city has won six ‘major’ conferences for 2019, worth £1.6m, through the Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau Conference Ambassador Programme.

The events, secured following a competitive bidding process and carried out in partnership with the bureau’s conference ambassadors, will attract some 1,250 delegates to the city.

The business events sector is experiencing rapid growth in Dundee and Angus, contributing £68m to the local economy and bringing around 255,000 delegates to the region each year.

The city made headlines recently with the opening of the £80m V&A Dundee, an architecturally stunning museum of design, and the main focal point of a £1bn redevelopment of the waterfront.

Karen Tocher, business tourism manager at Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau, said: “It is thanks to our excellent relationships with our partners, and the support of our conference ambassadors that we have been able to secure these six major conferences.

“Business events has seen a steady annual growth each year and 2017 saw an increase of 7.4 per cent on 2016 and continues to grow with bids in progress for conferences in 2020 and beyond.

“It is this very drive for innovation and discovery that attracts conferences and events to Dundee. The region provides an inspiring destination due to its openness to change and creativity.

“Having a steady business events sector – backed up by significant investment in hotels and conferencing venues - is truly an opportunity for Dundee to open its doors to the world.”
