Food and wine-loving golfer to head Geneva bureau

Geneva will have a new convention bureau director in the shape of 49-year-old, multi-faceted Didier Allaz.

He will take over from well-known Anja Loetscher who retires next spring having served in the position since the inception of the bureau in 2007.

His main aim will be to further reinforce the Geneva Convention Bureau’s activities at both national and international level and to maintain its contribution of over CHF 60 million per year, on average, in revenue.

After business studies in his native Lausanne, Didier Allaz joined Swissair and went on to hold several leading positions in Switzerland and abroad. Following further employment in the world of travel and tourism he began work in the events management sector for UEFA, in charge of such major projects as the Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria. He was then employed by large international companies, local SMEs and a start-up, all of which he believes has given him a unique capacity to adapt to local as well as global business shifts and a style of management steeped in respect for others.

An oenology, gastronomy and golf enthusiast, he said:“Taking over the reins of the Convention Bureau is an exceptional opportunity to develop a project focused on values that I have always fostered: respect for the client, team spirit and pride in sharing our Geneva and Swiss knowhow. My ambition – which must be ours – is to maintain Geneva’s undisputed status as a convention destination. Bringing together the actors who have turned it into a recognised innovation hub and together fostering a rallying dynamic will guarantee our competitiveness. And let’s not forget to add a touch of ‘Swiss-ness’.”

Geneva Tourism General Director Philippe Vignon welcomed the new arrival. “I am delighted to welcome Mr Allaz as director of our Convention Bureau. With his professional experience, his business acumen and his talent as negotiator, he will know how to rally tourism stakeholders around a shared vision to continue to maintain Geneva’s status as a key destination for conventions.”
