Long-term investment in facilities and client relations has led to Malaysia’s capital securing a series of high profile international medical meetings

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is located in the heart of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre precinct, a 100-acre ‘city within a city’ and home to everything an event organiser is looking for – 25,000 hotel rooms, entertainment and, of course, plenty of options to explore Malaysia’s famous food. With great international accessibility, the Centre and the city are competitively priced and English is widely spoken.

The Centre itself is an award-winning venue that is continuously investing in its facilities and long-term client relationships. Offering almost 35,000 sqm of purpose-built, flexible space, it has earned a reputation for its commitment to the industry.

Following a recent visit, Ben Goedegebuure, General Manager, Maritz Global Events, said: “Kuala Lumpur is an excellent destination and its principal qualities are expertise, value for money and the exceptional hospitality in this country. It is one of the outstanding international destinations to recommend to all multinational and international delegates that might come to this destination.”

Supporting associations

Recent industry events held at the Centre include the UIA (Union of International Associations) Associations Round Table Asia-Pacific 2018, an interactive two-day programme that brought together close to 200 leading business events industry players from 15 countries. In conjunction with the Round Table Asia-Pacific, host partner Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) held Malaysia Association Next (MyNext). An annual congregation of Malaysian association leaders and professionals, it provided participants with a platform to exchange ideas and debate issues that impact the future growth and sustainability of associations in Malaysia.

Also held at the Centre, The PCMA-ICESAP Knowledge Exchange Kuala Lumpur 2018 saw an engaging educational programme bring together more than 30 leading business events industry players, stakeholders and decision-makers to share knowledge and experience.

Strong in medical meetings

The Centre enjoyed a strong year for medical conferences in 2018, with seven high-profile events attracting more than 7,300 participants including: the Congress of the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) 2018; World Congress of World Society of Intravenous Anaesthesia Onlus-Target Controlled Infusion (SIVA-TCI) 2018; World Cancer Congress 2018; Asia Pacific Congress of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA) 2018; International Diabetes Federation-Western Pacific Region Congress (IDF-WPR) 2018; Malaysia International Dental Exhibition and Conference (MIDEC) 2018; and the 3 Masters: 4-Day Oral Rehabilitation Symposium & Hands-On 2018.

The Centre’s General Manager, Alan Pryor, said: “We are delighted to be the ‘venue of choice’ for medical business events in Malaysia. The country is fast developing a strong reputation for successfully hosting medical events and the performance from this sector looks set to continue for us, as this year we have eight medical meetings confirmed, which are expected to attract more than 6,300 participants. A number of these events will be using our brand new 11,000 sqm expansion, which opens soon.”

What the clients say

Speaking after the World Congress of SIVA-TCI 2018, Organising Chairman Dr Raveenthiran Rasiah said: “Hats off to the Centre, the professional team played an important part in making our event so memorable; it was truly a shared success. We organised this meeting without a professional conference organiser, which was only possible thanks to the Centre’s support and guidance. Everyone was fantastic and their flexibility was outstanding, every request we made (even last-minute ones) were taken care of immediately, with no questions asked. We received so many positive comments from our delegates, especially about the delicious food. We can’t wait to come back and are aiming to have our next national meeting at the Centre.”

Echoing Dr Raveenthiran’s comments, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Congress & Events Specialist Ronan Carella added: “Overall, running an event at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre was a smooth experience. The Centre's staff were professional, efficient and very responsive, which was crucial to us. I would recommend the Centre as a conference venue without reservation.”
