Around 3,500 delegates were arriving in Basel, Switzerland, for the bi-annual European Aids Conference.
The congress, 6-9 November, give experts in the field the chance to learn about the latest findings, the current challenges and the best practices when dealing with the virus.
Work on bidding for the event started in 2013 and was spearheaded by chair of the local host committee Prof. Manuel Battegay and the local convention bureaux.
Host venue the Congress Center Basel, has staged several high-profile medical events recently, including the the AMEE Congress (International Association for Medical Education) last year. Next year it hosts the Annual Conference of the Societies of Haematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO).
Major events are increasingly finding their way to this city on the Rhine.
"Our city boasts an impressive concentration of research groups and companies in the life sciences sector”, says Jonas Scharf, managing director of the Congress Center Basel. “From leading scientists and biotech entrepreneurs, right through to patent specialists, more than 30,000 people work in the corresponding industries here – more than anywhere else in the world in such a small space.”
