Largest scientific meeting in Estonia triumps on awards night

The largest international scientific meeting ever held in Estonia has been named ‘Conference of the Year’ in an award ceremony hosted by the country’s convention bureau.

The 34th European Group for Organizational Studies Colloquium (EGOS) was held across two sites, both in Tallinn: the Estonian Business School (EBS) and Tallinn University.

The three-day event, organized by EBS, attracted 2,000 delegates, including academics from the world’s top universities and representatives of major scientific journals.

“Hosting such a large-scale event – and doing it so well – was the best kind of advertisement we in the convention industry could have ever hoped for. The EGOS conference should be a tremendous source of pride for EBS, the nation’s academic community and the country as a whole,” said Kadri Karu, managing director of the Estonian Convention Bureau (ECB).

Tallinn Deputy Mayor Aivar Riisalu presented EBS with the honour at Wednesday’s awards ceremony, which was held in the Tallinn Teachers’ House on the capital’s historic Town Hall Square.

The ECB chose EGOS as the winner from 15 conferences, each attracting more than 300 delegates.

The bureau also used the occasion to name 10 new conference ambassadors for Tallinn, academics and professionals who will be taking an active role in attracting conferences to the country.

In November Tallinn is expecting to host 5,000-delegates at the Junior Chamber International World Congress, which will be the largest event in any category Estonia has ever held.
