Sverrisdóttir takes leading role at Meet in Reykjavik

Sigurjóna Sverrisdóttir has taken over as managing director of Meet in Reykjavík – succeeding Thorsteinn Orn Gudmundsson, who led the convention bureau from its foundation in 2012.

Sigurjóna has been with Meet in Reykjavík since 2012, most recently as director of Exhibitions and Events. She has an MBA from the University of Iceland and a BA in Acting from Iceland Academy of the Arts. She said the capital city had grounds for optimism as she took over the reins.

“MICE visitors continue to elevate the Icelandic economy,” she said. “Last year, we welcomed an estimated 135,000 international MICE travellers. The number has been growing steadily since the opening of Harpa Conference Hall and Convention Centre in 2011, with a 14.4 per cent average annual growth.  We have also been climbing the ICCA country and city rankings; this year, Reykjavík moved up 30 places on the worldwide ranking from the previous year.”

Arna Schram, chairman of Meet in Reykjavík, said: “Reykjavík has over the last several years built up a reputation for reliability, high-tech infrastructure, service excellence and convenient flight connections to and from North America and Europe, in addition to being known for the one-of-a-kind nature that surrounds us. We intend to continue on this journey.”

Gudmundsson said: “I have enjoyed the buildup and development of Meet in Reykjavik since its foundation in 2012 as well as the numerous international MICE industry connections it has brought with it. It has been great and truly rewarding journey both on a professional as well as personal level. This spring however I felt it was about time to make way for great colleagues to take over with renewed enthusiasm and for me to seek new challenges in Iceland or abroad.”
