Wellington, NZ, puts out an international conference call

Wellington, New Zealand, has arguably punched above its weight when it comes to attracting business events and things are set to get even better in the southern most capital city in the world.

A new convention centre is due to open by the end of 2022 that meeting leaders in the city will, ‘significantly lift the bar for hosting business events in Wellington and New Zealand’.

Last year WellingtonNZ’s Business Events team won 34 bids for conferences across a broad range of industries including computational engineering, medical science, environmental studies and public law.

Key meetings won include the Conference of the International Society of Critical Health Psychology (2021), Interactive Surfaces and Spaces (ACM ISS) 2021, International Society of Public Law (ICON – S) 2021, Island Biology (2022), and the Pacific Association of Chemical Ecologists – APACE (2025).

WellingtonNZ regional development destination general manager David Perks said the Business Events team has done an ‘outstanding job within the confines of the city’s existing conference infrastructure’

“Wellington has a super compact heart which means delegates’ accommodation is within walking distance of our venues, as well as the city’s cafes and restaurants, famed nightlife, and its vivacious offering of concerts and theatre performances.

“This makes our offering a compelling proposition to those organisations which value quality-managed conferences where delegates can easily mix both formally and informally in a safe, modern city.”

Perks said Wellington’s share of business events would take a giant leap forward when the new Wellington Conference and Exhibition Centre is completed by the end of 2022.

The 18,000-square-metre WCEC features 10,000sqm of  convention space spread across its top two floors. It will have seating capacity for up to 1,400 delegates in its main plenary space. The space can also be configured to accommodate two medium-sized conferences concurrently across the two levels.

“When the WCEC opens in the centre of the city’s CBD – across the road from New Zealand’s National Museum Te Papa and Wellington’s sparkling harbour – it will usher in a new dawn for business events in Wellington. It will significantly lift the bar for hosting conventions in Wellington and New Zealand.”

WellingtonNZ has significantly stepped up sales and marketing activity for the WCEC. To this end, it has recruited internationally experienced Convention Sales Manager Irette Ferreira to manage a larger Business Events Wellington team.
