OYW 2023: leaders promised ‘something new’ in Belfast
Young leaders can expect ‘something new and very different’ when they gather to pursue ‘meaningful change’ at an international meeting in Belfast.
The 13th annual One Young World Summit will be held at the ICC Belfast in July 2023.
The event will bring young leaders together in Northern Ireland with the aim of creating a better world through ‘responsible and effective leadership’.
Irish-born Sir Bob Geldof, one of the summit’s counsellors, said they would experience ‘something new and very different’ when they descend upon the city.
“I love the fact that One Young World 2023 is in Belfast, because there’s so much that people in this city can talk about to these younger people: about processes that made two completely different cultures and societies function together; about discovering there is another way of doing things; that there is a future and that talking through subjects actually works,” he added.
The summit will bring together more than 2,000 young people from 190 countries and connect impactful younger leaders to accelerate social impact.
As part of the summit, young leaders will be counselled by political, business and humanitarian figures, such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Irish president Mary Robinson, Sir Richard Branson and the Duchess of Sussex.
One Young World described the 2023 Summit in Belfast as an opportunity to celebrate the city’s youthful dynamism, talent and history, as well as create opportunities for its young people who are driving positive, peaceful and impactful change in the years to come.
Co-founder Kate Robertson added how the pandemic brought “enormous distress” to the younger generation, but in the same time frame, that generation has also proven its commitment to activism, sustainability and social justice.
“We are eager to focus these next Summits on what we’ve learnt from this global pandemic, and how we can leverage the good work that has been done so we can continue to push for meaningful change,” Robertson said.
